The purpose of the original committee that grounded our work was to elaborate a process of collaboration among community groups, Aboriginal organizations, and university researchers toward a common goal: improving the graduation rates of Aboriginal youth. Initially our discussion focused on the scope and nature of the challenges, and later moved on to exploring funding opportunities to support a project that would allow us to work together in a formal capacity. That search led to an application to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), to the Community-University Research Alliance (CURA) program. In December, 2004, we received notice that our application, entitled Community-Based Aboriginal Curriculum Initiatives: Implementation and Evaluation had been successful. Our funded work continued, with extensions, until June 30, 2012. Initially we focussed on inviting community-based knowledge keepers, or artist-educators, into the classrooms of our five participating First Nations communities. As our work evolved, we expanded by also including much more indigenous literature, and some land-based initiatives. To support the participating First Nations schools, and public school divisions and teachers, as well as our on-campus teacher candidates, we developed the Aboriginal Curriculum Initiatives Centre (ACIC) in the Faculty of Education at Brandon University. The ACIC housed literature, manipulatives, curriculum documents, and other resources that would support teachers in indigenizing the curriculum. On campus, teacher candidates developed Indigenous Inquiry Kits (IIKs) to support them in their teaching; some of those kits were contributed to this website.

This post-grant website now has as its primary purpose, the posting of resources that will assist teacher candidates and classroom teachers to indigenize the curriculum. The digital data-base and the APA listing of materials are somewhat dated, with the latter undergoing more recent renewal. The most current lists of resources are included within the 49 Indigenous Inquiry Kit (IIK) themed lists of literature (items in colour are not in the IIK, with some now out of print), as well as the reviews of indigenous films and movies (there are over 300).
